If you are convicted of a sex crime in Kalamazoo, it can affect every aspect of your life. Not only are you looking at stiff penalties and possible jail time, you may also be featured on Michigan’s Public Sex Offender Registry to which the general public has access. This can not only hurt your ability to live a private life, it can also hurt your chances of obtaining a job in the future as employers may not be too keen on hiring a so-called sex offender.
This may be the case for a 55-year-old man who once worked in the Kalamazoo Public School system as a janitor. Authorities arrested him after he allegedly sexually assaulted a child. They found child pornography images on floppy disks in the man’s possession. The man accepted a plea agreement and pled guilty to two counts of possession of child sexually abusive material, in exchange for the dismissal of one count of using a computer to commit a crime and four counts of possession of child sexually abusive material. He also pled guilty to second degree criminal sexual conduct.
The man was recently sentenced to 10 to 15 years behind bars. He made a public apology to his family and friends and those he may have hurt.
Because so much is on the line, if you have been charged with a sex crime, it is vitally important that you seek the help of a lawyer. An attorney can help you navigate through the legal process and ensure that you get a fair trial.
