Meet Criminal Defense Attorney

David G. Moore

David was raised in rural West Michigan, the child of a parochial school math teacher. His education journey took him away from the area and off to Arizona State University, where he earned his BA degree in 1997. David then attended Thomas M. Cooley Law School, where he was recognized on the Dean’s List for multiple semesters. He graduated in 2001 in the top one-third of his class.

As his first position out of law school, David served as an assistant prosecutor. He never lost a felony trial while fighting on behalf of the government. Now, David concentrates his efforts and talents on advocating for defendants in criminal cases. He develops strategies that minimize the impact of the charges, but he focuses on tactics to gain an advantage in litigation. David has handled numerous capital felony cases, though he is equally dedicated to defending minor misdemeanors. He is honest, diligent, and compassionate, qualities that benefit the client relationship.

In his free time, David enjoys exercise, being outdoors, cooking, and family get-togethers.

Informed Decision-Making for

frequently asked questions

  • What are the stages of a criminal case in Muskegon County?
The first is being arrested, followed shortly by your arraignment where charges are formally filed and the judge addresses bail. Next steps involve pretrial matters, including court appearances, motions, and hearings. The court will then set a trial date.
  • What happens when someone is arrested?
Police will take you into custody, so you should always follow officers’ instructions and never resist. Do not answer questions or make statements that could incriminate you. Immediately exercise your right to counsel by contacting a criminal defense lawyer.
  • Do I have options for defending the charges?
Your first opportunity is attacking the prosecution’s case, because weaknesses prevent the government from meeting its burden of guilt without a reasonable doubt. Other defense opportunities include asserting lack of intent, mistake, and self-defense.
  • What are other strategies for resolving a criminal case?
If you do not have a defense that could lead to a dismissal or acquittal, you may have options to resolve the case by plea bargain. The court has final approval, but you could reduce the charges, the penalties, or both.
  • What sentence should I expect if convicted?
Misdemeanors are punishable by up to a year, while felonies could lead to a sentence of several years or life in prison. The judge may also order fines, as well as restitution to pay back victims of financial crimes.
  • What factors should I consider when hiring a defense lawyer?
Experience and knowledge are critical, but it is also important to find out whether the lawyer focuses on criminal defense. Plus, compassion, attention to detail, and honesty will serve you well when retaining a lawyer.
